微軟在公司的部落格公佈 Windows XP SP2 、 Windows 2000 Server 和 Windows 2000 Client 的支援將截止於 2010 年 6 月 13 日。
微軟藉此鼓勵使用者在支援終止前升級到 Windows 7 、 Windows Server 2003 或 Windows Server 2008 。該公司也提醒用戶，官方並不支援 Windows 2000 直接升級 Windows 7 。
因此 Windows 2000 的用戶必須先升級到 Windows XP，才能再安裝 Windows 7 。
微軟也推出協助升級的工具。「我們的 End-of-Support Solution Center 可協助您規劃搬移策略。」微軟的 Stephen Rose 在部落格說道。
這項線上資源包含 Windows XP 到 Windows 7 搬移指南、 Windows 7 自動安裝工具包和使用者狀態搬移工具。
雖然距離終止支援還有 7 個月，聽起來時間很充裕，但其實許多企業都還是以 Windows XP 為主。
由於前一版作業系統 Windows Vista 的軟體相容性及效能問題，升級使用的企業為數不多，而才推出不到 2 個月的 Windows 7 顯然又太新，IT 管理者無法安心使用。
調查顯示大部份企業至少在 Windows 7 推出一年後才會考慮升級，但隨著微軟公佈終止支援，企業可能得被迫重新規劃。
但在終止支援後，微軟還是會提供 Windows XP 及 Windows 2000 安全更新，但就不會再有效能修補程式、服務包或其他非重大更新。
